Marginal & Semi-Modals
Bazı fiiller kimi zaman kip gibi, kimi zaman tam fiil gibi davranır: marginal / semi-modal fiiller.
- dare ve need: olumsuz ve soruda kip gibi davranabilir (yalın fiil, -s yok, do yok): How dare you! / You needn't worry. Olumluda ve do'lu kullanımda tam fiil gibi: He needs to go. / He doesn't dare to ask.
- had better: güçlü öneri/uyarı; ardından yalın fiil: You had better apologise. Olumsuz: You'd better not be late.
- would sooner / would rather: tercih; yalın fiil ya da (özne değişirse) past: I'd sooner stay. / I'd rather you didn't smoke.
Bu fiiller kip ile tam fiil arasında durur; "marjinal" olmaları biçimlerinin karma olmasındandır.
