- this / that / these / those ile bir önceki cümlenin bütününe gönderme: The talks collapsed. This surprised no one.
- Özetleyici isimler ("shell nouns"): this approach, such a move, the issue, that assumption — önceki bilgiyi tek bir isimde toplar.
- the former / the latter: iki öğeden ilki / ikincisi.
- the above / the aforementioned (resmî) ve as such, in doing so, thereby gibi geri gönderimli bağlaçlar.
Amaç: aynı sözcükleri tekrar etmeden okuyucuyu metnin önceki kısmına bağlamak ve akışı sıkılaştırmak.
