Olumsuz ya da kısıtlayıcı bir öğe cümle başına gelince özne ile yardımcı fiil yer değiştirir (soru düzeni). Bu, resmî ve vurgulu bir tondur.

Dikkat: sadece yardımcı fiil öne gelir (did/have/had), ana fiil değil (istisna: ana fiil be ise kendisi öne gelir: Not only was it cold...). Yardımcı yoksa do/does/did eklenir. Bu yapılar günlük konuşmadan çok yazı ve resmî hitapta kullanılır.
